I was so excited to be the event photographer for United Spinal’s  Advocacy Day ROCH again this year. I find Advocacy Day photography energizing and inspiring. Hundreds of people gather from all over the USA with a common purpose. It is a two day event in Washington DC.  A reception kicks off the event followed by a full day of advocacy training. The next day volunteer members descend en masse to lobby their Congressmen and Senators. As their event photographer I got the opportunity to gain a much deeper understanding of the issues facing their community.  This year’s ROCH was especially important, given the landscape of health care and cuts to services and research.  Speaking directly to voice their concerns about the future of health care, services and research funding plays a critical role in educating their members of Congress. Healthcare directly affects us all.

United Spinal Network is an organization “…dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of all people living with spinal cord injuries and disorders…”  They were founded in 1946 by paralyzed WWII Veterans. Their goal is to advocate for people with spinal injuries and disabilities with programs and services that help individuals maximize their independence.  The end goal is that they may remain active members of their communities.

Every year, the United Spinal Network and Vets First, programs help our Veterans within the Network to obtain benefits they are eligible for. They descend on Washington DC for their annual roll on Capitol Hill.  As an event photographer on Hill Lobby Day, it is always inspiring to see other Americans out advocating for their cause.  And being that I have close family and friends that are veterans, this specific cause speaks so loudly to me.

And lastly, it was a true honor to be able to witness those advocating for benefits on the Hill.  This year with health care at the forefront of concerns, hundreds of wheelchair users, along with their caretakers and service dogs, took to the halls of the Senate and House buildings rallying for those rights.

These conversations, in my opinion, are what makes the difference for these men and women who selflessly serve for you and I. Advocacy Day Photography. ROCH United Spinal
