I specialize in fine art black and white and color lifestyle portrait photography of maternity, newborns, infants, babies, children. Maternity and new-born portraiture was a natural extension of my work and grew from a demand from many brides and their friends to create artistic images that would become a loved and cherished heirloom instead of the mall or school pictures which are often a display of torture rather than the essence of a small child's spirit. When I visit clients homes I love to see family history and stories displayed on their walls. However I have often wondered why sometimes clients fill their walls with paintings from department stores instead of portraits of their children. Why would you hang a department store painting of somewhere you've never been rather than an image of your family? Why not fill your walls with the Art of Childhood? These fleeting moments will NEVER come again.. Life is Art, fill your walls with the Art of Childhood! Here's a bit more information about our portrait work. Much of this information is also available in other areas of this site.
Maternity Portraits
Also known as Pregnancy Portraits or Mother-to-Be Portraits, the maternity portrait session is designed to capture the wonder and beauty of the female form during the last months of pregnacy. I recommend that we schedule the Maternity portraits for some time after the 33rd week. Depending on how you feel while pregnant, you may want to wait until you are 35 or 36 weeks along to really show off those curves!.
Newborn Portraits
The perfect time for a newborn session is during the first two weeks of life. It is important to capture all the newness of your infant. The tiny, clenched hands and that unmistakable newborn curl are signatures of a newborn session. During your newborn portrait session, time is allotted for nursing, and breaks’, this ensures a relaxed mood for everyone concerned. These sessions can be located either at my studio or at your home.
Infant Portrait
Once your child reaches three months old, it is time to schedule an infant portrait session. No longer a sleepy newborn, your baby is now alert and participating in his world. Documenting your child's first year of life with several portrait sessions will ensure that you don't miss any of the amazing changes they will go through. I also recommend a portrait session at the time when baby is able to sit up. I find they are very engaged with their world at this stage.
Children's Portrait
These portrait sessions capture the splendor and magic of childhood. Allowing your child to play and explore their surroundings, these sessions are designed for your child to have a great time, which in turn, results in great portraits.
Here's some general information about me. Most importantly, I love what I do.... Photography has been my passion for 20 years and regardless of the subject, the challenge is always to approach every each ones as if it's the first ever time it's been done. I grew up in London and moved to New York in 1986. After several years in NYC I moved to Boston and established Eikon Photography in Concord MA, a lovely town in the west of Boston. Eikon Photography aka Karen Sayre quickly became one of the most sought after photographers in the MA RI area. In 1990 I moved Eikon Photography to DC. Many people ask me why. Simply put, I got sick of the snow, and enjoy the energy and urban lifestyle that was still affordable (then) in DC. My work has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers locally here in Washington DC metro area as well as internationally.
