Headshots – Social Media Profile Photos: Best sizes and practices.

So, you’ve got your great new headshot and now all you need to do is upload it to your social media sites. Hang on a second, there are a few things you may need to do to your headshot before uploading it. Knowing the preferred size and dimensions for LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Google profiles before you start will make the process a lot less frustrating and give you more time to focus on other aspects of a great profile page. It’s tempting to assume that more is better when it comes to social media profile photo sizes, but actually, that’s not the case.

I’ve put together this simple graphic to get a quick view of the best sizes for each of the social media sites listed.

Here’s the most important thing – make a copy of your headshot file and put it somewhere safe. Only work on a copy of your headshot file and once you have completed the cropping and resizing save the file as a different title. An example: myheadshot_twitter.jpg. It’s easy to identify and you’ll know immediately which profile headshot photo is meant for which site.  In terms of how to create the correct size/aspect ratio – this will depend on the kind of software you have available on your computer. All Apple computers come equipped with Apples’ own photo editing software ‘Photos’. Windows-based computers also have a standard photo management software. If you’re unhappy with photo editing software that comes standard on your computer, there are many other free image editing and resizing software options. A quick google search will provide boatloads of options. One more thing, don’t forget to crop! If you don’t, some social media headshot photos will look squished and silly, which is not the look you’re after!
